6 Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Apartment

The snow has finally melted, the sun is shining, and summer days are right around the corner. Spring cleaning for apartments and homes is a process that some people opt for professional cleaning services to help tidy up, while others prefer to clean by themselves. Here are six tips below to help you organize and clean your home:

1. A Plan is the Start

Spring is here, so it's time to deep clean the house! To ensure you don't miss anything, create a checklist of all the tasks that need to be completed. This will include what needs to be dusted, cleaned, decluttered, etc. You can also use your spring cleaning checklist as a reminder for any purchases you may need to make (i.e. new sponges, rags, etc.) and when you want to get started (i.e. Saturday morning.)

2. Declutter Your Spaces

Excess clutter often leads to stress, so by getting rid of unused items, you can help improve your mental wellbeing. Make two piles – one for donation and one for discarding –then lighten your load (and your mind) by giving away what you don't need. Studies show that getting rid of clutter is beneficial to your mental health!

3. Gather Your Supplies

Before you deep clean, gather all the tools and supplies you need. This includes changing your vacuum bags, cleaning your mops, and stocking up on your preferred cleaning solutions. If you have sensitive skin, choose eco-friendly cleaning supplies and wear protective gloves. If allergies are a problem for you, wear a mask while cleaning; it will filter out dust and other particles that can make symptoms worse.

4. Start With a Room

Spring cleaning can be daunting, but breaking it down room by room makes the process feel more manageable. Once you finish one space and see the results of your hard work, it'll motivate you to move onto the next area.

Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the rooms in your house that you use multiple times a day, so it's the perfect place to start spring cleaning. Use sponges and paper towels to wipe away grease spots and shine up your stove. Freshen stained cutting boards with lemons, wipe out the silverware drawer, and throw out expired foods in the cupboards. And don't forget about doing some deep cleaning:

  • Deep clean the refrigerator.

  • Disinfect the oven and burners.

  • Scrub the counters.

  • Sanitize garbage cans.

Bathroom

No one likes a dirty or moldy bathroom. Use bleach spray to clean the grout and prevent mold from coming back. Remember to:

  • Remove hard water buildup from the showerhead.

  • Clean shower curtains with bleach solution.

  • Wipe counters, vanity, and shower caddy.

Bedrooms

A clean and comfortable bedroom leads to a good night's sleep. Make sure to:

  • Change sheets.

  • Vacuum or steam clean your mattress to combat dust mites.

  • Clean light fixtures.

Living Room

The best way to clean your floors is by using a vacuum or steam cleaner. If you have carpets and pets, renting a steam cleaner will ensure the job is done properly. You should:

  • Vacuum the floors, couch, and soft chairs.

  • Organize bookshelves.

  • Dust tables and ceiling fans.

Windows

To let the spring sunshine brighten up your home, keep your windows clean.

  • Dust blinds

  • Wash curtains

  • Use glass cleaner on the windows

  • To reduce streaks caused by direct sunlight, clean windows on an overcast day.

5. Bring Some Fresh Energy

Embrace the warmer months by bringing some renewal into your home! Add a pop of color with new pillows or decorations. Plants are an excellent way to add not only color, but also fresh energy to any room that might feel dull after winter. Let your home reflect new beginnings by switching up your decor and adding or taking away items as you see fit. Rearranging your favorite pieces of furniture and knickknacks can make them feel exciting again. Even something as simple as changing the curtains can breathe new life into your space.

6. Make it Fun

Vacuuming, dusting, and scrubbing doesn't have to be a chore you do by yourself. Make it fun for the whole family by playing music and dancing while you clean. Or, if you want some peace and quiet while you work, send your loved ones out for the day. You'll feel accomplished after ticking everything off of your cleaning list.

As you deep clean your space this Spring, take pride in what you're accomplishing! Not only will it make your surroundings look amazing, but research has also shown that decluttering can improve your mood and self-esteem. So put on some upbeat tunes, open up the windows, break out the rubber gloves, and get ready to tackle that mess! After all, a tidy living space leads to feeling optimistic and focused on the future.
